Coach
The coach answers questions about what you are studying. Open it from the thing you have a question about, and it starts with that in view: a review card, a grammar note, a verb, a word, a text, or a correction.
Asking a question
Pages with the navigation bar have a coach button at the bottom of the screen; the reader and review sessions have their own. The label says what the coach will see:
- Ask the coach: a general question, from any page (and from the top of your Profile).
- Ask about this card: in a review, once the answer is shown.
- Ask about this note, or Ask about this exercise on an exercise: on a grammar note. Selecting a passage in a note offers to ask about just that passage.
- Ask about this verb: on a verb page or a form page.
- Ask about this comparison: on a grammar-of-reading comparison.
- Ask about this text: in the reader (also in the reading controls), and on a correction page.
- Ask about this: in a word’s or sentence’s More panel in the reader.
- Ask about this correction: on each correction of your writing.
Type your question and press Enter (Shift+Enter starts a new line). The answer appears as it is written. On a computer, an empty chat offers a few Suggested questions, such as “Break this sentence down” in the reader or “Compare with a language I know” on a grammar note; Expand and Shrink change the panel’s size.
How the coach answers
- In your display language, unless you write to it in the language you are learning.
- Briefly, and about language: it points out where a language you know works the same way, and it declines questions that have nothing to do with language learning.
- Each time you open the coach, it starts a new chat.
If you send many messages in a row, the coach asks you to wait a minute (“Too many messages in a row”). If it cannot answer, your message is kept and Try again sends it again.
Your chats
Profile → Coach lists your chats, newest first, each with what it was about (Card, Note, Verb, Text…), its first line, and its date. Tap one to read it again; its label links back to what it was about. If that item has since been deleted, the chat keeps what it saw.
The bin button deletes a chat, after a confirmation: the coach will not remember it.
Your chats are private: teachers you give access to cannot see them.
The Coach button in the editor
When you are writing, Coach in the editor’s toolbar is different: it gives a one-off review of your saved text, not a chat. See Writing documents.
