Reading grammar notes
How to find the note you need, read it, and work through its exercises.
Finding a note
- Search: type in the search box at the top of the Grammar page. Results list every matching note with its level, area, and your mastery; levels and areas are hidden while you search.
- Browse: open a level, then an area, to see its notes, 20 at a time.
- Bookmarks: the bookmark icon on a note marks it; the bookmark button on the Grammar page lists only your bookmarked notes.
Reading a note
A grammar note explains one point. Its title is in the language you are learning, with the translated title underneath. Badges show the note’s CEFR level (A1 to C1) and its area; both are links.
Under the title, Your standing on this note shows your mastery, how many practice cards you have and how many are due, and when you last reviewed. Practice turns the note into review cards; see Grammar practice.
Example words and sentences can be tapped like text in the reader, for translation and audio.
Switching languages
A note opens in the language you are learning. When it has a translation, Read in (followed by your language) at the end of the note switches to it; switch back the same way. Reading the explanation in the language you are learning is a good stretch once the point itself is no longer new.
Across your languages
With comparisons turned on (Profile → Account → Languages), a note shows an Across your languages box when the same point has a note in a language you know: “The same point, in a language you already know”, one tap away. When the note belongs to a comparison in the grammar of reading, the box ends with a row that opens it.
Exercises
Many notes end with Exercises, numbered, each labelled with its kind:
- Fill in the blank and Complete the sentence: type the missing words.
- Choose the form: pick from a list or tap one of the options.
- Correct the sentence: the sentence with mistakes is already in the box; fix it. The exercise tells you how many things there are to fix, and shows what changed once you have it right.
- Translate into the language you are learning.
To answer:
- Type or choose your answer. When you tap an option, it is checked straight away; otherwise press Check.
- The feedback says Correct or Not quite — try again.
- Hint gives you a nudge, when the exercise has one. After a wrong answer, Show answer reveals it.
Some exercises show a translation of the sentence under it, so you know what you are trying to say.
Asking and reporting
- Ask about this note, and Ask about this exercise on each exercise, open the Coach with the note in view. Selecting text in a note offers to ask about that passage.
- Something wrong here? at the end of the note sends a report to the team, with the note attached.
