Creating decks
Building a deck takes two steps: create the deck, then add cards to it. A deck reviews nothing until it has cards, so the workspace takes you straight from one to the other.
To create a deck
- Open Decks and choose the + button (Create a new deck).
- Give the deck a title in the language you are learning and one in your own language. Both are required: reviews can show either side.
- Optionally pick a Folder (or type a new folder name) and add Tags. Leaving the folder blank keeps the deck at the top level of My Decks; tags group decks across folders.
- Choose Save and add cards.
Adding cards
The deck’s workspace has four card types (Word, Sentence, Verb, Number) and two other sources: Upload spreadsheet and From bookmarks.
Words
Type a Word and, optionally, its Translation. Leave the translation blank and Immersive fills it in. Pressing Enter adds the card and clears the field for the next word, so you can enter a list quickly.
Sentences
Enter sentences one per line and choose Add cards. Translations fill in automatically; you can edit them in the card list afterwards.
Verbs
- Pick verbs from the Essential, Common, or All list. Essential holds the first verbs a new learner needs; Common and All have a search box. Immersive remembers the list you used last.
- Tick the Tenses you want to practise.
- Choose a card style: One card per person (each person reviewed separately) or All persons on one card (the whole tense table on a single card).
- Choose Create cards.
Numbers
Enter numbers separated by commas, without spaces, for example 17,70,71,80, and choose Add cards. Each number becomes a card that you read, write, hear, or say in words.
From a spreadsheet
Choose Upload spreadsheet to import many cards at once:
- Choose a CSV or XLSX file with two columns: the text in the language you are learning, and its translation. The translation is optional. Download template.csv gives you a file to start from. Up to 500 rows are read.
- Choose Preview. Each row becomes a word card or a sentence card, depending on its text. Rows already in the deck are marked In Deck and arrive unticked, so you do not create duplicates; translations Immersive filled in are marked Auto so you can glance over them.
- Tick the rows you want and choose Import cards.
From your vocabulary
From bookmarks lists the words and sentences you marked as saved in your Vocabulary, for this deck’s languages, all ticked. Filter by All, Words, or Sentences, untick what you do not want, and choose Add cards. The entries stay saved in your Vocabulary.
Example sentences
A word card or a verb card can carry an example sentence. In the card list, choose Add example (or Change example) on the card, then:
- From your documents: sentences you have read that contain the word appear first.
- Write your own: type a sentence and choose Attach sentence.
- Generate: Immersive writes one sentence at your level; choose Regenerate if it does not fit.
Other ways decks get made
You do not always start from a blank deck:
- Copy a Library or public deck to My Decks and it becomes yours to study. See Managing decks.
- Add to a deck in the reader (from a word’s More panel) or on a verb page opens the deck’s workspace with the word or verb already filled in.
- Create a deck from selection in your Vocabulary makes a new deck from the entries you tick.
- Immersive fills the From reading, Bridge comparisons, and Grammar practice decks as you study. See Decks & Reviews.
